Museo della Cipolla Rossa
The Red Onion Museum of Tropea PGI, which is part of the Civic Museum of Ricadi, extended in 5 different locations in the city, is located near the station of San Nicolò di Ricadi, the middle area of vast production to red onion.
From the 60s to the 80s from the station of Ricadi, the major loads of onion were shipped by rail until the transport was not supplanted by road. In the sheds around it, the product was processed, which also came from neighbouring towns but also from more distant areas such as Campora San Giovanni in the municipality of Amantea. At that very time, the companies had formed a consortium based in San Nicolò di Ricadi.
In the first room, the museum show the history of the red onion where initially started the cultivation, from Ricadi to Tropea, to Parghelia, to Zambrone until to Briatico, starting from the late eighteenth century until the end of the last century, with a rich iconographic apparatus exposed in educational panels and with the exhibition of finds used for the marketing of the onion (baskets, bags, labels etc ).
The second room is dedicated to traditional cultivation, from flower to seed to cultivation in the field and to the “braid”, with the exhibition of objects used for the cultivation and processing of the product.
There is a third room with photos and various tools for the cultivation of the land.
