Belvedere del Capo e il Faro
The Belvedere del Capo overlooks at different places: the Gioia Tauro Gulf, Aeolian Islands, the Strait of Messina and the coast of Sicily with Etna.
The sea below includes beaches of Grotticelle, closed by the promontory of Torre Santa Maria, inhabited by the Greeks since the sixth century BC.
On the right, the Palombaro reef, with a population of dwarf palms of the genus Chamaerops humilis, commonly known also as Saint Peter’s palm, which here grows in a particular shape without trunk. The lighthouse is located 100 meters above sea level and was built in 1870 with a harmonious prospect.
It is a rectangular building, with a terrace roof, and with a cylindrical tower with a rotating optics system with an intermittent light of twenty seconds.
The lighthouse of Capo Vaticano is one of the few lighthouses that is not obscured towards the ground, so its beam of light is also visible from the territory around, giving an emotional atmospher to the nights.
